I work at a retail store and was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what I could do to help improve sales in my department. I don't like to feel like I am pushing a product on a customer. I would just like some suggestions on how I could get people interested. Or even a website that had tips on it. Thanks!

The first and most important step in retailing your professional beauty care products is to believe in the products yourself. The products you carry must be products that you are also using on your customers. When they see how beautiful they are after using "the product" they are prime for suggestive sellling. You need not be pushy. A simple "you can duplicate this texture and softness of your hair by using product X". Show them the mousse bottle after you apply it to their tresses and ask, "doesn't this mousse smell like coconuts, wait till you see the results"!

Hair care, skin care links to cancer?

There's a website called cosmeticdatabase.com which lists all the beauty products & levels of toxicity. Should I really try to follow their guidelines and avoid products that have any connection to cancer, organ toxicity & stuff? Like, are the products less effective if they are not that toxic?

I have found that as far as most products go, there is no admonishment of effectiveness and, in fact, better quality. All organic shampoos (I have short hair and don't use conditioner), styling products, toothpastes, makeup, soap, body wash, facial cleansers and moisturizers work as well as any chemical laden product I previously bought. My biggest problem has been in deodorant. I always had trouble finding deodorant anyway.
The chemicals that are generally toxic are preservatives. Unless you plan on using that same bottle of Herbal Essences for 10 years, why buy it? The manufacturer uses the chemicals to keep it on the shelf as long as possible. Huge companies like Aveda and L'Occitane have proved that you can have a quality product with a shelf life.
Personally I do it in part for my health, in part for environmental reasons.
